If you’ve never given or received a hot stone massage before… the benefits are incredible to your health and muscle healing. You can learn more about the benefits of hot stone massage here. In today’s post I want to do a beginners tutorial to hot stone massages. I’m in no way an expert, but my husband and I have tried hot stone massages on each other and I must say… it was very enjoyable and relaxing.
Hot Stone Massage Techniques For The Back
Things you will need, to give a hot stone massage:
- Warm Coconut or Olive Oil ( you could also melt raw cacao butter and use that oil for massaging)
- Flat Massage Stones
- Warm Towels
- Crock pot (optional)
Places where you can buy massage stones.
My favorite places to get massage stones is at the beach! Often people think they need to buy special massage stone kits, when frankly they could get them from their local beach. If you don’t live near a beach, then unfortunately you will have to buy them. But if you live close enough to a beach this is what you will want to look for, when picking out your hot stones for massage at the beach…
How to finding the perfect beach rocks for hot stone massage
There are 2 colors of beach stones that I have found to be of the smooth texture that works perfectly for hot stone massages. I’m no rock expert either- so I don’t actually know the names of these rocks, but you will be able to see them clearly when they are wet. They will have an almost glass feel (when wet) and be either black or white in color.
The other quality you want your beach stones to have is a nice semi flat, oval or circle shape. No need for perfection here. I’ve found stones that where flat put had a bit of curves to them. These work perfect for massaging out the knots in your feet or shoulders!
How many stones do I need?
I’d say a good handful. If you’re massaging the back, face and feet – try to get a variation in sizes of stones, to accommodate the different areas of the body that they will be used on. Face and foot massage stones are small vs back or front are typically medium to large. A good rule of thumb is medium to large about the size of your hand and palm. Small stones are about the size of a half dollar or quarter.
How To Heat Massage Stones – The Easy Way
If you don’t have a crock pot to heat your massage stones in, don’t worry you can also use a microwave to heat your massage stones.
Heating Massage Stones In The Microwave
Dampen a hand towel and wrap several stones inside the towel. Place the towel with the stones inside the microwave on high at 1-2 minute intervals, until the stones feel warm to the touch and hold a consistent warm temperature. Reheat stones as needed. (Be sure to keep the towel damp or the towel will caught on fire)
