Things You Need To Know Before Buying Essential Oils

What You Need To Know When Buying Essential Oils

I love natural healing, or maybe you already figured that out – lol. So whenever my friends or family are dealing with… let’s call ’em “life’s little sicknesses” they always ask me what they can use to heal this or that. Or how I cured this or dealt with that naturally.

I admit, it excites me to know that more people are coming to me and asking to to heal things naturally. Because this is a true passion of mine.

Anyway…

The other day I got asked a few questions about buying essential oils and I thought it would be a good idea to clarify those questions for you as well.

Essential Oil

Things You Need To Know When Buying Essential Oils

Not all essential oils can be treated equally. Some companies dilute or add carrier oils, this means you’re not getting the most bang for your buck. Other companies don’t properly extract the oils, this means you aren’t getting the best and purest quality essential oils.

So how do you know you’re getting the best essential oil?

Simply put, you NEED to look for as many of the following in the description or label for the essential oil that you’re buying. The more of these term included the better the essential oil is going to be:

  • Organic
  • Undiluted
  • 100% Pure Essential Oil or Unadulterated Essential Oil
  • Extraction Method (steam distilled is best for all oils except citrus, which you want to be cold pressed)
  • Latin or Botanical Name of the Plant
  • Country Where Plants Are Grown and Oils Are Extracted From

The majority of essential oils are extracted from countries that prohibit the use of GMO plants. However, that said- to be 100% confident that the company is not lying about it’s purity… I would highly recommend you stick to only organic essential oils, because they are much more strictly observed.

Which is one of the main reasons why I only buy my essential oils from: http://destiniingoldsby.com/sparknaturals

Are essential oils edible, can I ingest them?

This is a great question, there is a huge list of essential oils that are considered consumable by the FDA. One thing to note is that when consuming essential oils… they’re concentrated version of the herb, plant or tree. Whenever ingesting or applying essential oils topically you NEED to dilute them. If you need help knowing how to dilute your essential oils, visit my post “Everything You Need To Know About Diluting Essential Oils”. But a quick guide is this…

A total of 12 drops of essential oils to every 1 fl oz of carrier oil. You should seek to make a 2% dilution of the essential oil for use. You don’t have to worry about diluting essential oils when you use a diffuser or if you’re smelling them straight from the bottle.

Do not consume more then 3-4 drops orally of your diluted blend, once or twice a day. While essential oils are consumable it is not always necessary to take them orally to reap the benefits. If you want the full list of edible essential oils you can find it on my blog here.

Another common question is…

Is there different gradings for essential oils, like Therapeutic Grade, ect?

Ummm, actually no. There’s no grading system for essential oils. Which is why the list of things to look for on the label is what you really need to identify quality and purity.

No governmental agency or generally accepted organization “grades” or “certifies” essential oils as “therapeutic grade,” “medicinal grade,” or “aromatherapy grade” in the U.S. There is no formally approved grading standard used consistently throughout the essential oil industry. So this is not a true way of determining quality and purity of the essential oil that you wish to buy.
