I recently did a post for Valentines Day about a raw cacao or chocolate massage. If you read it, I hope you got a chance to actually try it!
It dawned on me that, alot of people really don’t know where to buy raw cacao powder. Although I did provide a link to Amazon where you can buy it, I also wanted to list a few other places where you can buy raw cacao and my secret place for finding “the good deals” on unique items such as this.
But before I dig into that, let’s go over some of the amazing benefits of consuming raw cacao on a daily bases.
Is Raw Cacao Good For You?
You bet it is! This is what womens health magazine was able to dig up about the health benefits of raw cacao…
Raw cacao is one of the best food sources of magnesium – a mineral that many of us don’t get enough of in our diets. Magnesium is essential for energy production, for a healthy brain and nervous system, for our muscles and for strong bones and teeth. Magnesium may also support a healthy blood pressure.
Cacao is also a source of iron, which builds the blood and helps to transport oxygen around our body, as well as potassium, copper, zinc, manganese and selenium.
Cacao can also be high in flavonoids, which have antioxidant activity. Cacao and flavonoid-rich chocolate have been linked with heart health benefits including increasing the good form of cholesterol (HDL) in our blood, lowering blood pressure and even improving vascular function in patients with congestive heart failure. These effects are thought to be primarily due to the antioxidants contained in the cacao.
In addition, cacao contains a compound called phenylethylamine (PEA for short!). PEA is thought to elevate mood and support energy, and is said to be one of the reasons that many people love chocolate!
Raw cacao is also very low in sugar, and of course does not contain any milk, so is suitable for those who are milk-sensitive or following a low-sugar diet.

Why is chocolate bad for you?
Well, frankly hon… read the label. I’ve spoken in a previous post about how bad soy is for you. And soy is in almost all store chocolate these days. Also the processed sugar. You’re body doesn’t handle processed sugar well – to much processed sugar leads to all kinds of health issues. Also when cacao is roasted to make standard chocolate bars, you lose a good portion of the antioxidant and other nutrients that is so valuable in raw cacao to begin with. Lastly, look at all those preservatives and dyes. Even if you just try to eat a normal chocolate bar, the ingredients list has so many things in there that you can’t identify without an encyclopedia!
So Where Can I Buy Raw Cacao Powder?
Like in my other post, the first and easiest place to shop online for raw cacao is Amazon. Your best bet is to look for something organic and raw, this way you know you are getting high quality and purest form.
Santa Barabara Chocolate sells raw cacao, it’s 100% organic and unsweetened. Not sure if they sell the cacao powder, but I was able to find the chunks. You can always place the chunks in a food processor or melt them down depending on what you’re using the cacao for.
Lastly, I promised you my secret shopping spot for buying high quality items like this at deep discounts – often 50% off or more. Are you ready… TJMaxx or Ross. Truly, this is where I buy most of my gourmet food items and high end kitchenware. I always have to know what I am looking for otherwise I can get alittle carried away, but it’s a great place to buy raw cacao powder and other organic items like this. *Note, if you’re shopping for something at TJMaxx and you see it… get it, ’cause chances are, it won’t be there next time. (Learned that the hard way.)
Other Raw Cacao Product Options
I found these other fun ideas for consuming raw cacao, I’ll be doing a later post about application of raw cacao. But for now, check these out…

If you’re looking specifically for a way to make your own hot chocolate or chocolate milk using raw cacao powder, then CocoaVia might be a good option for you. If you love tea like me, then I’m sure you’ll enjoy this too. The Chocolatier in the UK as a raw cacao tea! I’m not sure if US citizens can order or not, but it would be worth a shot. I may just have my sister order it for me, since she is in London and then I can grab it from her when I visit.

If you’re into muscle building or just use whey protein as a meal supplement, Plant Organic as a raw cacao whey protein powder on their website.
